Gothic dress can be an expression of the shadow side of life: things socially ignored or frowned on like death, challenging emotions (like grief or depression), etc.
The black clothes are supposed to be a way of expressing their dark feelings. They are expressing how they do not fit into normal society. They feel and want to portray that they are different.
