Your friend can be charged by the police for filing a false report. The penalty depends on the jurisdiction and the nature of the false report. Your friend can also be sued for costs and damanges by parties who were arrested, charged, jailed or forced to obtain legal services.

This penalty varies depending on your locality but in general the penalty involves a fine and possible jail time depending on the severity of the lie. At the very least your friend will need to go to court so they will need to secure a lawyer.

The penalty for filing a false police report differs from state to state, but can be a serious offense. It can be either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the states laws.

It depends on the state the report was filed in. A false police report itself is typically known as perjury, the penalties for the crime differ on a state by state basis.
