In ancient Rome, the finger was called the digitus impudicus ("impudent finger") and was used to insult other people in a Greek comedy as well.

Many attribute this gesture to the English showing their middle fingers after the Battle of Agincourt in defiance to the French boast that they would cut off the finger.
