The medulla oblongata is the lower half of the brainstem. It regulates the centers for cardiac, respiratory, vomiting and vasomotor functions. It also conducts signals between the brain and the spinal cord, and it controls the body's autonomic functions, like breathing, heart rate, swallowing, defecation and urination, reflexes and blood pressure.
