This depends on the flag in question, in some it is a symbol of religion, in others it is part of a constellation that has meaning to the country. In the American flag, each star symbolizes a state, in the Israeli flag, the six pointed star is symbolic of Judaism, for Australia the star represents the Commonwealth.
