The life span is determined by the brand and model of pump you have. It should last around 15 years. There may be another problem causing the short lifespan.

The first problem is has it ever been maintained? If not, they last about 5 years. Properly maintained, they can last as long as 20 years. It also depends if the specifications for lift have been exceeded, then they will only last a year or two.
