Plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and through the process of photosynthesis produce carbohydrates. Photosynthesis uses light energy to produce ATP and NADPH used in carbon fixation during the Calvin cycle. Oxygen is produced as a waste product of photosynthesis. Plants take up minerals, nitrogen and phosphorus from the soil to use in biochemical pathways.
