Typically, oncologists say that a lung cancer patient on average has 2 years to survive if the treatment is tolerated well. That statistic would be null and void if the cancer has spread outside the lungs to other parts of the body and other organs. The earlier the diagnosis the better the outcome.

Small-cell lung cancer has a long survival period but that's not very obvious, because most people find out that they have small-cell lung cancer at the very end of the cancer cycle. If found early, a long time, if found late and allowed to develop freely, the more common experience is short.

This depends on how far advanced the cancer is but unfortunately small-cell is usually advanced before diagnosis. The life expectancy is usually six to twelve months.
