Theatre and film costume designers would sew stockings onto the undergarments of actors for ease during movement and dance. Allen Gant of Glen Raven Textile Mills in North Carolina produced a version of pantyhose at the same time that another inventor and North Carolinian, Ernest G. Rice developed a more comfortable version that is closest to what we have today.

The ancient Greeks wore hosiery, and throughout history both men and women used stockings. Cotton stockings made by machine were manufactured in the 1800s for women. Dupont invented nylon, and nylon stockings became popular after World War II, replacing the silk stocking. By the 1960s, panythose without seams were available.
