Catapults were used by the Romans as early as 3rd century BC. The catapult continued to be used as weaponry until as recently as World War I. In the early stages of trench warfare catapults were used to hurl grenades into enemy lines. These were later replaced by mortars. Today catapults are used to launch fighter jets and clay pigeons.
