The Adler Panetarium is the first one built in the United States, and opened in 1930, seven years after the technology to create celestial projections was invented. It's named after Max Adler, a Chicago businessman who was a vice president of Sears Roebuck and Company, having married into one of the owning families.

Not only the first planetarium in the United States to be constructed, the Adler Planetarium was the first planetarium in the western hemisphere. It was built in the early 1930s by Max Adler.

Located in Chicago, it was the first planetarium built in the western hemisphere. It was built in 1930 with funds provided by Max Adler. The first director was Philip Fox. It has three full-size theaters. It was designed by architect Ernest A. Grunsfeld, Jr., who was highly praised for his design. It was declared a national historic landmark in 1987.
