What is the history of Sierra Leone?

Sierra Leone was one of the first regions in West Africa explored by Europeans. The area quickly became involved in the slave trade. Eventually the English exerted increasing control over the region during the 18th and 19th centuries, ultimately turning Sierra Leone into a colony. The country became an independent nation in 1961.

Sierra Leone was first established as a republic in 1971, so is a reletively new country. The Portugese were the first to use it as human slave hub in 1495.
