First Piggly Wiggly was started in Memphis, TN and they spread throughout the south. They were a revolutionary concept in that they carried such a huge variety of items under one roof. They expanded at an amazing rate, but the proprietor eventually went bankrupt due to rapid overexpansion. They still exist today and can be found throughout the southern states.

Piggly Wiggly was founded in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee by Claude Saunders. It was the first true self service grocery store and that idea was patented by Saunders in 1917.
