In 1853 during the California gold rush there was a German Immigrant, Levi Strauss who was going from New York to San Francisco. He was planning on starting up a dry goods store and had some rough canvas for tents. As it turned out, what everyone needed was pants so he had the canvas turned into waist overalls.

Levi jeans came about during the gold rush and that time period in general, men needed pants that wouldn't wear out especially in the knees during long days of work and panning for gold. Denim was exactly the material they needed, it just does not wear out, though modern jeans aren't made of denim anymore.

I believe that the jeans were created in California during the gold rush. The creator's name was Levi Strauss, and he used the rivets to attach pockets because the rivets were quite durable.
