Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa as a cultural holiday for African Americans. Its beginnings can be traced to the civil rights movement of the 60's. As a cultural celebration Kwanzaa has no religious affiliation and is meant to be a week long celebration that promotes a better understanding of African cultural & history to people within the community.

Kwanzaa was developed in the United States in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, and he intended it to be an African American holiday. It is meant to celebrate the "universal" African culture. Karenga developed Kwanzaa so that Africans could have an alternative holiday to that celebrated by the "dominant culture."
