Icewine was first made popular by the Christians in the 18th century. They liked to enjoy a cold drink for dinner. Also, wine was scarce back then. Thus, the addition of ice made it likely for those to enjoy the flavor of the drink, while not actually consuming.

Ice wine is a sweet, high alcohol content wine that is often served with dessert. It's so sweet, in fact, that many drinkers prefer to have the wine in lieu of a dessert. A German winemaker discovered how to make the drink about 200 years ago when he pressed some grapes that had frozen on the vine.
