What is the history of Ash Wednesday?

Although reference to ashes in the Old Testament are found, meaning sadness and sorrow, the use of ashes to mark the head on Ash Wednesday wasn't used until the 600's.

In traditional Christian mythos, ash wednesday comeafter fat tuesday. Fat tuesday being a day of frivality and celebrating. Ash wednesday is the begining of the lenten season.

The practice was first done by the Ancient Christians, during the reign of Gregory the Great. It was made universal in 1091. Originally it was a private ritual, which later turned into being public. It wasn't always a religious ritual.

Ash Wednesday is an inherently religious holiday. It comes from the earliest Christian times, and commemorates the beginning of lent.
