What is the etiquette associated with the order of names?

Like if the woman in a couple is a doctor and the man is not, should her name come first?

For a married couple, address invitations to "Mr. and Mrs. Robert Davis." If they are not married, address the invitation "Dr. Jones and Mr. Davis." A physician is merely one role she has. It is not necessary to include "Dr." for face-to-face introductions: "These are my friends, Bob and Judy."

Regardless of the woman's profession, usually the woman's name is listed first, then the man's name. For example, 'Dr. Jane Smith and Mr John Smith'. A man's first name and last name should never be separated, i.e. use ' Jane and John Smith'; do not use ' John and Jane Smith'.
