What is the difference between salsa and picante sauce?

Salsa is any tomato based spicy sauce, whereas picante sauces are usually a cooked variety of salsa. I have always thought of pico de gallo to be a fresh salsa.

Salsa is normally used for tortilla chips as picante sauce is more of a soupier texture that is used as topping for tacos, burritos, etc. Pico de gallo is different from both, it is made with a few different ingredients but is very chunky like some salsa that is made.
