What is the difference between raster and vector artwork?

I've seen both, and they look very similar to me. What is different about each?

Vector artwork can be zoomed in infinitely. It is used mostly for logos which need to be printed very large, for example on a billboard, without losing quality.

a raster image is made of pixels. A vector image is described by lines and points and is resolution independent: you can scale it as large as you want.
