What is the difference between paint and glaze for walls?

I don't understand if they are used alone or together.

Paint covers the surface with a color. A glaze changes the color or adds a pattern or layer to creat dimension in the painted surface.

Glazing simply is an additive for paint that causes the paint to dry slower. This allows the paint to be manipulated longer to achieve a desired effect. Individuals trying a faux finish for the first time need this.
