What is the Difference between fall and autumn?

There is no difference in meaning between Fall and Autumn according to the dictionary. However, in common usage Fall usually refers to what is happening in nature. Basically, the leaves turn colors. Autumn is the name of the season. The Autumnal equinox occurs 22-23 September. The season continues until 21-22 December.

They mean totally the same thing. The difference is that Autumn is English word, and Fall is American.

Autumn is when the the leaves turn colors and there is a crispness in the air. Fall is when the leaves have fallen to the ground and it is just cold.

Autumn is the actual season following the summer season. Fall is the catch phrase of autumn, given the leaves fall off the trees! My Mom is 87 and has heard it both ways that the season is called. When did fall become a season?Mid 1800's?

There is virtually no difference between fall and autumn. They are the exact same thing, both are the season that follows summer, and comes before winter. Some people call this season fall, and some people call this season autumn. Either word would be correct.

In England, autumn is the times when colourful leaves remain on the trees. Fall is once they have fallen on the ground.

Nope, Fall and Autumn are used to mean the same season. There's no difference. But I think Autumn sounds prettier than Fall....I'm just saying :)

There is no difference whatsoever between the words autumn and fall. They are simply synonyms...two words used to refer to the same season. In the same way, 12 pm is also noon and 12 am is another term for midnight.
