A big screen television is large television probably 42 inches or more. A wide screen television usually its width is longer than its height e.g. 16:9 ratio. Not all wide screen televisions are large just as not all large televisions are wide screen.

If it's big enough to watch from 15 feet away then it's a big screen. If it has an aspect ratio of 16:9 then it's a wide screen.

Big screen televisions were the first large televisions on the market. The had large square shaped screens. Wide screen televisions, like movie theater screens, are more wide than they are tall. They are rectangular shaped and are usually preferred by movie lovers. If you purchase a DVD in widescreen format it will fit the widescreen TV.
