The D actually stands for Dimension. So 3-D is third dimension and 2-D is second dimension. Basically 2-D is like something you drew on a piece of paper. 3-D is something popping out, or the area around you. Even your body is 3-D.

3-D means three dimensional. 2-D is two dimensional. A square is two dimensional. A cube is three dimensional. 2-D is flat. 3-D includes depth or perception of depth.

Something that is 3-D has a length, width, and depth. An example a cube. 2-D only has length and width. An example is paper.

2-Dimensional animation has only two dimensions - length and width. Everything is flat. Three-dimensional is different in that it has three dimensions, length, width AND height. Think of the difference between a painting and a sculpture. The painting can be thought of as 2-D, the sculpture 3-D.
