Webster's Dictionary gives two definitions of promiscuity. One is the commonly used definition meaning sex with multiple partners. The other is "miscellaneous mingling or selection of persons or things."
According to any dictionary promiscuity refers to the practice of mixing things which belong to different types. It may also refer to mixed sexual behaviour.
