The density of gasoline typically ranges from 710 kilograms to 770 kilograms per cubic meter. The density of water ranges from 958 kilograms to 983 kilograms per cubic meter. Thus, gasoline is less dense than, and will float on water. This is why water it not especially good at extinguishing gasoline fires.
