What is the cost to hold one person in prison for a year?

My sister said that it cost us a great deal of money to have the death penalty, but I think it cost more to house them.

The average cost to house a person in prison for one year is at least $20,000 and this does not account for costs such as salaries of prison workers.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, on an average for this year it costs $20,000 plus for yearly housing. That equates to fifty-six (rounded up to the nearest dollar) dollars a day.

I feel that the cost would be approximately $100,000 per inmate. I know that it is very, very expensive!
