What is the cost to hold one person in prison for a year?

My sister said that it cost us a great deal of money to have the death penalty, but I think it cost more to house them.

It does depend on the state, as the cost of living differs. In California it costs up to $50,000 for one year of incarceration.

The average cost to hold one person in a prison a year is actually $20,108. Suprisingly, it does cost more money to have the death penalty.
