car repairs

Question by  Rrr (18)

What is the cause of the whining sound my car is making?

It's a Porsche 944

Answer by  beck (1099)

If it's a turbo 944 then you might be hearing the turbo which is normal. If it's not a turbo then most likely what you are hearing is from the serpentine belt. Anything with bad bearings that the serpentine belt runs will make a whining noise.

I would have a mechanic check it out. A whine could be caused by anything from a belt to the transmission. Without more information about the car I can't really narrow it down.

It is probably your fan belt. It is best to have a mechanic fix it. Sometimes you can tighten the fan belt yourself if it is just lose but you may need a new one. You'll need a screw driver and wrench and get under the car to get at it.

the sound could be a bad altenator or engine part that is bad. have a mechanic check before parts are installed.

if its got over 60k miles on it its probably the timing belt and if thats the case it needs attention asap before it breaks.

The whining in the car could be many things. from a power steering fluid leaking out to a fan belt whining. Some times leaving your car window open a crack will cause a whining noise. If it is constant it could be a serpentine or alternator belt.I would have it checked out my your dealer.

My car is making a humming/whining sound when the gas is pressed. The sound gets worse when the air conditioning is turned on. Whats wrong with my car?
