Pepper spray does work sometimes but once a dog get a hold of you they may not let go even with the spray so the best way is to avoid situations where you must repel them.

To repel dogs, you can use a repel spray bought from a pet store like PetSmart or Petco. You can also bring a spray bottle filled with water or scent it with orange oil. Orange oil is disliked by many animals and insects including dogs, cats, bees, and ants. Try flea powder as a repellent as well.

If you are trying to keep a dog off furniture, try putting a piece of foil on it. If you are trying to keep them from biting something, use bitters.

Try to chase the dog by waving your hand if it does not gets repelled then try to chase it with a stick or something which is near you at that instance.
