What is the best way to connect curtains to a curtain rod?

Modern day curtains come with holes in the curtains that attach to curtain rings to attach to a curtain rod. So just buy curtain rings. But if you're trying to make a curtain on your own, like I did, I used the cheap and ghetto way of using safety pins.

Tabbed curtains let more light into the room. The kind where you just slip the rod into the tunnel into the top work well for full coverage.

There is usually a slit at the top of the curtain that allows you to slid the rod in, if not you could make slits at the top yourself.
