The meter must be in SERIES with the element you want to measure current through. It's not like a voltmeter, which is in parallel with the element you're measuring across.

Mount the ammeter on bread board using mounting frame and screws. Remove the bread board components. Connect the positive and negative lead of ammeter to lifted component lead and post respectively. The ammeter is series with the circuit. The ammeter show the power circuit current. Use a sensing resistor to calculate the expected current to avoid the damage of ammeter.

It all depends upon what you want to test. Some things you need to solder off the board to test them properly.
