A cough that lasts longer than two weeks should be investigated by a physician to determine the cause. Until you know what is causing the cough, do not self treat.

Smokers usually need one cigarette to calm them ( even if this is a bad idea) as for those non-smokers it's recommended a warm glass of tea or hot chocolate ( coffee and coffee-derivate products are not recommended). Do not use cough-syrups because most of them contain some percentage of alcohol so better to drink one glass of warm schnapps.

A persistent cough can be a symptom of underlying illness. If you have it for more than a week you should really consider seeking medical attention. Over the counter medications are not meant to treat persistent cough.
