If your child awakens with a sudden barking cough or a crowing sound when inhaling, you should suspect croup. Call your doctor immediately, as this is very serious in children.

Use a cool mist vaporizer in the toddler's room. But before that ensure he gets a lot of Vitamin C in his meals.

You should probably call a pediatrician if she has a persistent ongoing cough, especially if a fever is involved. The government and the FDA are reviewing OTC cough medicine to make sure that it is safe for toddlers, so it's best to go to a pediatrician and get a prescription.

Before you give them any medication try to use honey mixed with lemon juice, crushed ginger and garlic. Ensure you air their bedroom and their bedding frequently as this could be an allergic reaction.
