They are attracted by food. Pet foods, fruits and vegetable gardens, food scraps in the garbage, will all attract skunks. Nothing else is more effective than getting rid of that.

Skunks will eat everything from grubs to pet food to garbage. First make sure your lawn is as grub free as possible. Then never leave pet food outside. Locking trash can lids, or a shed with lockable doors to put them in. If nothing else works, you can buy large predator urine and spray it around your yard.

Mothballs seem to work well to keep skunks away. Also make sure if you have a garden to put the mothballs close to it because skunks love vegetables.

The very best is make sure all garbage, animal feed etc is kept tightly secured. Make sure all access to crawl spaces, etc are closed up. Moth balls can help and there are commercial deterrents. Make sure your pets have rabies shots. If well established, you may need professional help.

My wife thinks that using lavendar spray can kill almost anything including skunks. Well, not really kill them, but at least get rid of them for a while. You see most people really just hate the smell of the skunk instead of the actual skunk itself.

The best skunk control is to make their chosen environment less appealing to them. For instance, keep fruit that has fallen from trees picked up. Around your garden you could put moth balls because skunks hate the smell. Keep holes in ground next to old buildings filled with dirt but make sure there is no animal inside.
