Mothballs will work, but the best way to keep them away is to get rid of food that attracts them. Keep your garbage bags sealed and bins closed tightly.

There is nothing that's truly effective in repelling skunks. To keep them away, it's more effective to get rid of what attracts them, which is usually a food source.

Yes. Except you kind of have to use a lot of them since the balls are a pretty much concentrated to a few spots. I use a snake repellent that smells the same as moth balls but comes in small pebbles like cat litter for much better coverage and lay it down in a wide path.
