The ACCA standards indicate that for a single level, ranch home, the thermostat should be in a central location. The ACCA standards indicate more than one floor should be zoned.

Usually they are located near the unit due to wiring issues. As long as the thermostat is not sitting very close to a vent then it is most likely getting the ambient temperature of the house. Most house designs also put the thermostats in the center of the house so windows will not affect it.

The best location is where ever you would want to be able to change it easily without having to travel through your house to find it.

If you are wanting to put this thermostat in your house then you will need to put it in the middle of your house. This will conserve the energy the best.
