White fireplaces are always look clean and crisp while giving off a shabby chic country sort of appeal. However, black fireplaces are daring and modern. It all depends on the surround decor. If you're an artsy type, why not paint it the same color as your throw pillows? Or the same color as an accent piece?

Personally I think White is the sharpest looking color for painting over bricks. It seems to make everything look crisp and goes with just about any style. It is best for modern rooms though. I suggest you paint your fireplace a color that goes best with the theme that you have in your room.

Painting brick is usually not recommended unless the brick is unappealing or stained beyond repair. In these cases, they can be painted with a brick-toned paint (assuming that the existing grout is in good condition). Another choice is to paint the entire surface (grout and all) with a shade that coordinates with the rest of the room's decor.

It may depend on the style of room that the fireplace is in. A white paint would look good in a more modern space. Also, many home supply stores have easy tile (or other surface) kits that you can use to give the fireplace a new look.
