In an open room, you have the option of choosing any paint color that you like. Darker paints can "close in" a smaller room, but when you have a big, airy room, you can feel free to experiment with darker colors.

Does your room have lots of windows, with lots of light already? What is the color of your carpet and drapes/curtains and furniture? Your paint needs to blend in with the other objects in the room. Is your room large? Small? Dark paint for large, light paint for small rooms.

Light colours can make an open room look bigger, however if you want an eye-popping effect dry a medium dark purple or a pinkish red.

It doesn't have to be light, but whatever paint you choose will make a statement. Think of the paint as a larger part of your decor than in smaller rooms.
