It depends on what fabric you are dying. Cotton can be dyed with either hot or cold water dye with success. Hot water dye is better for proteins like silk.

RIT dye is great for most fabrics. It's one that professional designers use. However, different fabrics take the dye differently. Try it on a swatch first if possible.
