It does cost money in that you need to make purchases to get the rewards. You might as well participate though, because this cost is spread among all customers regardless.

Best Buy Rewards Zone program is free. How the program works: Sign up to become a member, use your card when making purchases at Best Buy(or other places, depending on which of two card you have), for every $1 spent, you earn points, points which can be reedemed for certificates.
