The Rf value is used in Chromotography in chemistry. It's calculated by measuring from the center of your spot and spot of placement and dividing that number by the number achieved by measuring the distance from placement of sample to the solvent front. This is to help equalize any error for when determining unknowns.

Rf (retardation factor) values are used to measure the distance that is traveled by a solute in a solvent. It is calculated by dividing the distance of the colored line by the distance of the front line. This makes it a measurement without units so it can be compared.

Rf value stands for the retention factor of a sample taken during chromatography such as thin layer chromatography (TLC). This value is calculated by dividing the distance traveled by the sample you are analyzing by the distance traveled by the solvent front. This value differs between compounds on the same TLC plate dependent on interactions with the solvent.
