Someone can get a protective order through the court when they are being harrassed or threatened by someone. Sometimes it will be specific in the number of feet the person has to stay away from the person who filed it. The thinking is that the person will not want to get arrested and stay away.

This is an order by a Judge directing an individual to have no direct or indirect contact with you. This means no phone calls, no letters, no emails, no messages sent through friends. It can also be extended to cover family memebers, if the need is present.

A protective order prevents one party member from approaching the other, often times by having them stay a certain distance from eachother. It also prevents any communication between two parties.
