What is porridge?

All I know is that it must be very cheap because it seems to be a staple of the poor in history.

Yum! Porridge is just oatmeal, but the oats have been cut or ground up so that the texture is smoother. It is cheap, but with some fresh fruit and brown sugar, it is also delicious!

Porrige is what you get when you boil grains such as cornmeal, oats, or barley in either water or milk. Porrige can also be made with small beans. Porridge is an economical meal because you can often get the grains or beans needed for boiling very inexpensively. Porridge made from cornmeal is also known as polenta.
