A physically and mentally healthy adult cat will eat one to two cans of food a day and will not eat more than it should to maintain size. A cat who consumes enough to become fat or lethargic should be checked by a doctor. When available, a cat will supplement its diet with grass and mice.

It depends on the age, size and breed of cat. Kittens should eat as much as they want. Adults will nibble all day long, with an older, less active cat eating around one cup a day of dry food. Larger breeds, such as Maine Coon and Ragdoll may eat more.

diets fed were based on the individual cat's performance, using mainly commercial dry or foods and fresh meat. In most cases more than one food was offered. Food was given fresh twice daily.
