If you can prove that someone's action caused defamation of charachter, damage to your character preventing or hendering your ability to work or perform the functions of your job, then you can file a civil suit. If you can prove that then you will file a suit alledging the damage along with the specifics of the defamation.

Defamation of character can be written defamation (libel) or oral defamation(slander). You must prove that there was a false statement to a third party about you that was intended to harm your reputation. Gather evidence of the defamation, talk to an attorney and file a complaint in state court.
