You will get paid based on your degree(H. S. /College/Etc) and hours worked. You will follow the regular teacher's lesson plan and monitor student behavior. It is not just babysitting.

Basically, substitute teaching exists so that there is adult supervision in the classroom at a time when the original teacher can't be there. Depending on the teacher you are substituting for, it may involve just sitting there or handing out assignments. Usually, no actual teaching is done in substitute teaching.

Patience with kids. TO get involved, contact your local school disctrict. They have to do a background check and you'll have to take a class to become certified.

Degree requirements vary from school system to school system, but beyond that, a good substitute teacher needs to be patient, flexible, and always come to work with back-up activities.
