What is involved in staining pickled oak furniture?

The pickled look was the in thing a couple of decades ago - but no longer. All the best in getting them stained and getting 'em to look more modern!

For starters you will need to strip the oak furniture to remove all the paint. Oak, unfortunately has a lot of pores and all the paint and pigment may not come out easily. Use a chemical stripper and then sand it completely before you start staining the furniture.

You could try using a fine brass bristle brush to remove the last bits of paint. It sometimes does a good job. Since gel stains are thick it may simply cover up whatever is left without looking bad. add a comment

I've seen plenty of pickled oak stains available on the internet. Not sure which of them are good though. I've seen MinWax being used to good effect. You can get small cans for under 10$.
