First, spread a 1 inch to 2 inch layer of topsoil over the bare ground and till this into the dirt about 6 inches deep. Then fine grade the dirt with a three to four foot wide rake. During this process, remove all rocks. At this point, the ground is ready for grass seed or sod.

The soil must be moist and soft as possible. The new grass will root faster and more uniform if its starts in the right soil base. Chemicals and powders are not advised.
