You must apply on the Visa4UK website. There are no in-person options for applications. Be sure when applying to supply all additional proof that is requested. This may include bank statements, a letter from your current employer authorizing you to be gone this period, signed letters from whom you will be staying with, airline itineraries and personal data.

If you are a US citizen, you will not need to get a visa in advance. Be sure your passport is good for a year after your entry to the UK and carry enough funds to cover expenses. You should have a return/onward ticket, too.
